Bishop Robert Coyle New Auxiliary Bishop of Rockville Centre

Article from the Long Island Catholic

On the day it was announced that he would return to the Diocese of Rockville Centre as its new auxiliary bishop, Bishop Robert Coyle concelebrated the 12:10 Mass at St. Agnes Cathedral. The bishop, who grew up on Long Island and was ordained a priest at the cathedral in 1991, has been serving the Archdiocese for the Military as Episcopal Vicar for the Eastern Half of the United States.

The appointment was made public in Washington, February 20, by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States. Bishop Coyle will officially begin serving the people of God of the Diocese of Rockville Centre on April 2.

Concelebrating the Mass with Bishop Coyle were Bishop Robert Brennan, Msgr. William Koenig, rector of St Agnes; Father Joe Fitzgerald, diocesan director of vocations, Msgr. Robert Morrissey, Judicial Vicar and Father Eric Fasano.

After Mass, Bishop Coyle said a few words, telling the congregation that he was wearing the zucchetto (skullcap) of Bishop John R. McGann. The cap was given to him by Msgr. Frank Caldwell five years ago when he was consecrated a bishop. Bishop Coyle said he was wearing it again this day in great thanksgiving.
